Quinces

Whether is a full scale production, or something a little more scaled down. For a Latin girl her Fifteen birthday is something that she looks Forward too. It’s a change in her social status from being a young girl, to officially being a teenager.

History and traditions of the quinces

Turning quince (fifteen) is an important milestone in a Latin girls’ life. It marks the point where she is no longer considered to be a child she is now a young lady.

The history of quince celebration dates back to 500 BC and the Aztec culture, it literally is a rite of passage for the young girl much like the sweet sixteen’s and the bar/bat mitzvahs.

The Quince tradition dictates that on the fifteen birthday the girl is ready to enter adult hood. This birthday is a special one and is to be celebrated as a formal affair with family and friend. This celebration begins in church with a formal mass. This ceremony re-affirms the vows the girls’ parents made during her baptism.

The mass is then followed by a formal celebration. Traditional quinces are celebrated with 14 couples which form the Quinceañera court, and the Quinceañera and her escort for the night will make the fifteen couple. Traditionally the Quinceañera will have a short dance with every male member of her court, then a series of choreograph dances will be performed with the Quinceañera dancing a formal dance with her escort for the evening. A formal dance is also performed with her father and any other prominent male family member.

The modern day quinces are celebrated & the Quinceañera is crown queen for the day, a formal event is usually planned and some type of choreograph dance is planned. There might be a small court involved or none at all.

Other traditions of the quince party is the presentation of the last doll, this once again symbolized the girl coming of age is the doll is the last toy she will received, which become a treasured keepsake.

The changing of the shoes, this is typical done by the Quinceañera mother, this is just another reference to the girls turning of age and her school shoes are exchanged, for high heels.

Once the traditions and formalities are done, a formal meal is served, which is then followed by a toast from the girls father. After the toast the party is ready to start and both young and old enjoy the celebration.
